PROCESS EXPERTISE

Our experienced inhouse process engineering team utilise state-of-the-art process simulation modelling techniques, including our own proprietary process models, for the purposes of developing, optimising and validating the preferred process flowsheet for a given project. Our process modelling enables the performance of a proposed flowsheet for a given project, to be evaluated rapidly and cost-effectively, an important consideration, when evaluating new process technologies.

  • Extensive inventory of pilot plants based on both conventional and proprietary process technologies.
  • Pilot plants available from bench through to larger scale, supporting systematic and rapid process scale-up.
  • Research laboratories with broad range of analytical equipment and instruments suited to process development, optimisation and validation. Analytical equipment available for a range of purposes, including sample characterisation include AAS, DSC, FTIR, GC, HPLC, IC, ICP-OES, LCMS, SEM, TGA, TOC-TN, UV-Vis & XRD amongst other specialised equipment and instruments, commonly utilised in water and wastewater treatment and laboratory settings. 

 



PARKWAY CENTRE FOR BRINE TECHNOLOGIES
  • In order to consolidate and further expand various process technology related capabilities, Parkway is leading the establishment of the Parkway Centre for Brine Technologies (PCBT) in Melbourne, Australia.
  • The PCBT is supported by Victoria University (VU), a recognised leader in industrial water treatment related technologies. Parkway and VU have been collaborating since 2015 and have collectively achieved several significant technology breakthroughs that underpin various innovative (core) process technologies.
  • The collaborative R&D related activities performed by Parkway and VU are supported by prestigious research grants awarded from the Australian Research Council (ARC), including through various industrial research hubs.

2) CORE TECHNOLOGIES
CORE TECHNOLOGIES
    • iBC® - the integrated Brine Causticisation technology, facilitates removal of impurities from concentrated (high TDS) and/or complex brines, enabling further downstream processing, including the production of industrial chemical products.
    • aMES® - our activated Minerals Extraction System, is an innovative process technology that enables the treatment of concentrated aqueous solutions, including brines, to recover a range of valuable products, reagents and fresh water.
    • Membrane technologies - including conventional (MF/UF/NF/RO/HPRO) and specialty membranes from leading global OEMs, as well as more innovative membrane-based technologies including AGMD, DCMD, SWGMD & VMD.
    • Electrochemistry - range of processes including conventional chlor-alkali technology and emerging electrochemical technologies, to achieve both ionic separation and chemical synthesis related objectives, in high value applications.
    • Hydrometallurgical processes - including application of and integration with leaching, solution purification, ion exchange, solvent extraction, precipitation, crystallisation and other conventional hydrometallurgical processes.
    • Direct lithium extraction (DLE) - range of upstream flowsheets incorporating both conventional unit operations, as well as various process technologies, including the core technologies outlined above, to provide fit-for-purpose solutions.

- Proprietary iBC® based carbonate-hydroxide processing routes, are applicable to downstream lithium processing.

  • Pre-treatment & impurity removal - various offerings, providing improved process performance and product quality.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Our core technologies are typically suited to high concentration (high TDS) primary, process and waste streams, where processing with conventional technologies, is unable to adequately meet project requirements. These applications include:

  • Salar derived brines, rich in lithium, potash and other minerals.
  • Geothermal derived brines, particularly from lower-enthalpy resources, amenable to DLE related technologies.
  • Industrial brines, derived from desalination processes, particularly reverse osmosis (RO) reject brines.
  • Hydrometallurgical process streams, including process liquors and various waste streams.
  • Broad range of additional applications, where we are able to beneficially treat process streams, to create value. 

 

RECENT PROJECTS

Parkway has provided process expertise including in relation to the core technologies, to a diverse range of large global industrial companies seeking to improve the efficiency of existing project operations, or alternatively to support the development of greenfield project opportunities, through more innovative process flowsheet optimisation options.

Recent Projects Include

  • Development and evaluation of various brine processing flowsheets for production of minerals, including potash.
  • Investigation into processing waste liquors from various TSFs at tier-1 polymetallic mine, with core technologies.
  • Investigation into opportunities to recover minerals and reagents from a waste stream at a major nickel refinery.
  • Development of process to treat CSG derived brines and produce industrial chemicals (see Case Study, next page).
3) PROCESS SOLUTIONS
DEVELOPING INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS: In Partnership with Worley

At Parkway, we are focused on high value applications, particularly concentrated and/or complex solutions, where we work collaboratively with our strategic partners, including leading OEMs, to develop an end-to-end process solution.
In May 2020, Parkway entered into a strategic partnership with Worley, a leading global engineering company, with primary operations in the energy, chemicals and resources sectors. Parkway and Worley have joined forces on several innovative projects, which enabled the parties to apply their respective strengths and achieve great overall outcomes.
Through the established global strategic partnership, Parkway and Worley, are able to provide the complete project scope required for successful project delivery, from early-stage process and project concept development, through to project execution, inclusive of:

  • Process plant (Parkway provides process technology package).
  • Balance of plant (BOP), inclusive of non-process infrastructure (NPI).
  • EPC Management (EPCM) related services, to support project execution.

Global Strategic Partnership

 

CASE STUDY: Queensland CSG Brine Industry
  • The globally significant coal seam gas (CSG) industry in Australia is underpinned by greater than $100 billion in investment, however generates large volumes (~5GL) of waste brine annually. Despite significant efforts by industry over many years, no viable long-term solution has been developed to manage this highly complex brine.
  • Following extensive process evaluations, Parkway has developed a proprietary brine processing solution for the concentrated CSG derived brines. The Parkway solution involves processing the concentrated waste brines, to reduce waste volumes by >98%, whilst producing a range of valuable chemical products for local industry.
  • The proprietary process technology package developed by Parkway, has recently underpinned a detailed feasibility study (incorporating extensive process piloting), with a major global energy company.
  • In June 2023, Parkway announced the industry-wide implications of the proprietary technology to address the entire CSG industry’s waste brine challenges in Queensland, through the release of Master Plan, an ambitious agenda to potentially create in excess of $10 billion of value for the industry.
